Standard ('intelligent verbatim')

Style

Accurately captures everything spoken by participants but for readability purposes omits:

  • False starts*
  • Repetitions
  • Excessive use of filler words such as ‘um', ‘you know’ and ‘like’

Use/Application

Style preferred by 95% of clients.

Suits any transcription requirements which do not demand linguistic analysis.

Orthographic transcription ('strict verbatim')

Style

Constitutes a strict record of what was spoken by participants in a recording and as such:

  • Includes all false starts*, repetitions and filler words which would ordinarily be excluded in standard slightly edited transcription.
  • Retains grammatically incorrect speaker idiosyncrasies.

Excludes paralinguistic and nonverbal communication covered under conversational analysis.

Use/Application

Often requested by clients who seek to undertake basic linguistic analysis of transcripts.

Pricing

A 50% surcharge applies for strict verbatim transcription.

A further 50% surcharge applies for full sound checking to ensure complete accuracy.

Conversational analysis transcription

Style

Transcripts are tailored to meet specific client instructions regarding features for inclusion and the symbols used to indicate those features.

Includes all attributes of strict verbatim transcription as well as features such as:

  • Descriptions of laughter, sighs, coughs et cetera.
  • The use of symbols to indicate pauses, pace, tone et cetera.

Ideal for clients seeking to analyse various paralinguistic and nonverbal communication embedded in an interview.

Pricing

Standard price of $9 per minute of audio plus GST (includes compulsory sound-checking) which may vary depending on exact requirements.

*False start: words spoken at the beginning of a sentence which the speaker quickly corrects with a change of direction.
